RIYADH: The final session of the Film Criticism Conference, organized by the Film Commission at Riyadh’s Cultural Palace, brought together critics, academics, and filmmakers from and abroad to enrich the country’s cinematic dialogue.

The Riyadh event is the third in a series, following successful gatherings in Asir and Qatif, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Sunday.

This edition focused on the relationship between cinema and place, highlighting location as a key element of visual storytelling and cultural identity.

The three-day conference, which ended on Sunday, featured sessions, workshops, and presentations on the roles of place, memory, and displacement in cinema.

Discussions examined how artists’ experiences abroad influence their narratives and visual styles, the SPA reported.

Workshops explored cultural memory, cinematic expression, and the fundamentals of film criticism, including practical techniques to enhance analytical skills.

A session also addressed the evolving role of film festivals in the digital era and their importance in preserving cultural memory.

More than 30 speakers and experts examined place in cinema as a space reflecting identity, memory, and social transformation.

The conference included a screening of “News from Home,” a 1976 documentary that features messages from Brussels and long shots of New York to convey alienation, nostalgia, and complex family ties.
